Merry Holidaze!  I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable time.  In the past I have taken a hiatus and not published anything for the next week or two… this year is going to be a bit different.

I decided while I was on the road traveling, visiting relatives, and generally goofing off over the holidays (people in Indiana would call them “Christmas” and “New Years”) I would go back and look at some of the older comics so that your could laugh at me at even thinking that I could do something as daunting as a comic strip.  I’ll will use the magic of Hindsight-o-Vision (patent pending) to say a bit about what was going through my mind when I posted these and what I have to say now that over two and a half years have passed.  Don’t worry I won’t be waxing nostalgically forever we will start back with new adventures after the New Year.

Today’s comic was originally posted June 21, 2010.  Compared to what you saw on Wednesday you can see I had been trying various things out including backgrounds and using grey.  The background shading came from the “Sunday strips” I had been doing.  Ben, the colorist, was using this technique and I decided to try it on the strip.  until recently I had been doing this and gradient backgrounds.  You notice some other changes in Cecil… the Goggles and “Dragonball Z” hair.  I had come up with some issues with Cecil specifically with coloring and tried a couple different things before settling for the time being on a few spikes and goggles.  The goggles have stuck, adding a steampunkish mad scientist look to Cecil, the spiky hair has not.

This was actually one of my most read arcs going back to the biocomic and bringing in Hemi as a character. I was having trouble (still am actually) drawing Hemi, just trying to capture his personality.  I have made one rule Hemi does not speak, he does not have thought bubbles, he just is.  There are many times I would love to have him say something, but as for now I really want to keep him a cat, not a Garfield or Scratch Fury knock-off.

As for technical stuff I was still drawing on card stock with a rectangle.  I didn’t change over to fancy “Comic Strip Bristol” until this year.

I hope you have enjoyed this trip down memory lane, and a brief glimpse behind the curtain of My Geek Odyssey.  The regular comic will return on Monday.  Until then from all of us at My Geek Odyssey (that would be me and my multiple personalities) have a safe and happy New Year.

Life is not Black & White… it’s shades of grey
