First of all thanks to the scores of volunteers who made the “Going APE” event a success. One of the infamous “Triad” for a cacher this is a must do if you get to Seattle and COWWS did a great job of making it a simple process and a fun event (even with the rain). Unfortunately, someone did take the lid to the cache the day before but “protection” was posted so nothing else could go missing. There was a lot of buzz about this cache being archived after all the GeoWoodstock frenzy calms down- but I really hope that doesn’t happen (Cecil on the hand would love it, since no one would be able to get the Triad and he likes being in a club with exclusive membership). This was a milestone for the Monkey (well planned out by Sue) Cecil logged his 1,100th cache. The geocaching iPhone App does make it easy – especially with a cell phone tower 1/8 of a mile away in the middle of the forest. With all this happening before the actual event… Cecil is getting into this whole thing which is scary.
For those unfamiliar with the A.P.E. caches these were placed to promote the remake of the Planet of the Apes film in 2001. While the film wasn’t a wild success, the caches were. Unfortunately if you want to log an A.P.E. cache in North America- this is the only one still around. The original path to the cache is closed – it was called the “Tunnel of Light” and the tunnel is now unsafe so you head at it backwards- without the drama of going through a tunnel. Those who did it before the closing of the tunnel have said it was a really cool experience.
