For those who have no idea what is going on right now I apologize, to a point, but would like to remind you that I do this comic sometimes for myself… just to get a crazy idea out of my head.  Now as for Wednesday’s “Execute Order 66” that is a geek reference to something that happened in Star Wars Episode 3- the bad guy broadcast an order to all the clone soldiers which resulted in almost every good guy  being killed.  Thankfully Yoda, & Obi-Wan escaped or episodes 4, 5 & 6 would have been rather short.

Today’s strip is a reminder that some people (me included) weren’t too happy when George Lucas went back and “fixed” Episodes 4, 5, & 6 to create what he had “originally” intended.  Frankly, the  redone “Special Editions” hold a special place in my heart, right next to Star Trek 5.  While I am not one to begrudge any creator a chance to fix his/her mistakes (that’s what director’s cuts are for) but don’t get rid of the original version.  I may be alone in my wish that I could still watch the original Star Wars films the way I saw them in the theatre (no matter how hokey they may seem now).  There was a buzz around Comic-Con last year that the release of BluRay version of the Star Wars Saga would include the original theatrical release versions also… All I heard later on was “no.”

Many people have used the phrase “Han Shot First” which goes back to the scene in which Han Solo is confronted by Greedo in the Cantina… Greedo threatens Han,  and Han (under the table) shoots him- before Greedo can even think about pulling the trigger.  This shows the type of scoundrel Han Solo was as the story starts and makes his change by the end even more dramatic… I am not the first to bring this up… but like Cecil I may have seen the prequels, but I can’t say they impacted me the same way “Star Wars” (before it was Episode IV) did as a kid in 1978.

Oh, I still have original copies of the Star Wars of my youth… The only thing that was done to these was digital remastering and tweeking a few of the special effects.  They sit on VHS which scares me as I think about how long they might last.  I do not have my original copy of Star Wars from my childhood which was on two Betamax tapes.  The first half ended up getting taped over with “The Harvey Korman Show” so I had to watch it starting with the line “Hokey religions & ancient weapons are no match to a good blaster by your side kid.”

Not in Continuity…

  1. I still refuse to call it “A new Hope” or episode IV, it is and always will be Star Wars. I have the original theatrical versions on DVD. A few years back they released two disk copies where the first disk had the “extended” version and the second disk had digitally remastered theatrical versions. Bought all three then and there before ol’ George changed his mind about it.

  2. OMG don’t get David started about the changes they made on the “Special Editions”.
