Merry Holidaze!  I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable time.  In the past I have taken a hiatus and not published anything for the next week or two… this year is going to be a bit different.

I decided while I was on the road traveling, visiting relatives, and generally goofing off over the holidays (people in Indiana would call them “Christmas” and “New Years”) I would go back and look at some of the older comics so that your could laugh at me at even thinking that I could do something as daunting as a comic strip.  I’ll will use the magic of Hindsight-o-Vision (patent pending) to say a bit about what was going through my mind when I posted these and what I have to say now that over two and a half years have passed.  Don’t worry I won’t be waxing nostalgically forever we will start back with new adventures after the New Year.

Today’s comic was originally published July 6, 2009.  When I returned from England I made the conscious decision to “have fun” with My Geek Odyssey.  While I still had requirements for the fellowship (publication dates and deadlines) I figured out that a bio-comic wasn’t going to cut it, that my life was just too boring.  So it was time to add an element of comic fantasy to it.  Cecil as a character became a real monkey who could talk.  Geocachers know that he only signs his logs “ook!” but to help the story move along I needed him to speak.  I then decided I needed to stop trying for the gag strip all the time and actually try my hand at story telling.  This arc was conceived, written and drawn on the road to Mini Meet East meets West.  These changes actually made it more fun to work on the comic.  I also made another decision… I would try to focus on the Mini Cooper Community as an audience.  I fell into a few problems with this decision in that I realized, yet again, how much I don’t know… but that came later.

Notice the character design is going through more changes.  the character of “Bruce” for a brief time had a more rounded nose.  Cecil started off like this and has evolved over the years to how you see him now.  He started out lie this since the physical manifestation of Cecil is a stuffed monkey approx. 10 inches in height and when I tried to draw him to scale all detail was lost.  The strips of this time period were still just black and white line art other changes would come later.

This arc introduced the character of “Tink” my classic Mini.  Tink is still around, just doesn’t show up as much in the strip since I still don’t like exactly how I draw her.

I did like this strip (I like some of my comics) in that I was experimenting with camera angles in this arc which at the time was really cool and something I do need to keep in mind even today.
